Maggie Holmes Art Exhibit
Artist/photographer Maggie Holmes will be presenting her work this week in the HCC Library. With a background in theater, film, and radio, Holmes gives her work a unique perspective. Holmes lived in several rural towns in the Midwest including Minnesota and Illinois. Her photographs center on the people and places where she has lived. Using both black and white and digital photography processes, Holmes creates images that reference timelessness. This connection to time and place is much larger than the individual as we grow and become a larger group. Symbolism is important in her work. Holmes looks for and uses lakes, mirrors, eyes, and windows to create a time warp that allows distant generations to face each other. Camera double exposures, layering images in Photoshop, and often printing over a photographic image with parts of another image extends the basic photograph allowing her to play with the passage of time and reconstruct new photographs out of current and old photos, stretching a life line through past generations. “Photographers change what they see immediately by perspective, depth of field, and cropping,” says Holmes. “I see photography as an elastic medium where the boundaries of reality can be blurred by printing different images on top of one another, making composites of various images, ageing or dying the papers, and using the negative as part of the image. Family makes us who were are. Time and place are important themes in my work. I find I return to them over and over again. My photographs are layers of images and symbols referencing the past and connecting the present.” Holmes is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in photography at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.
